5 Home Safety Tips for Fall

Fall is here.  And with fall comes shorter days, colder weather, and the holiday season.  Here are five home safety tips to make life easier this fall.

1 – Defend against package theft with a video doorbell

With the holiday season approaching, you may be planning to do a lot of online shopping.    At one time or another, approximately 35% of people have sent a package to a location other than their home in order to prevent packages from being stolen.  Don’t be a statistic!

A video doorbell solution, such as Skybell in combination with our Total Connect app, can help you prevent theft.  Turn on motion detection to receive a push notification when someone is at your door.  If you spot anything suspicious, use the two-way audio feature to scare off potential thieves.

2 – Avoid costly water damage from frozen pipes

If you’re a snowbird, you have probably already booked your flight down south.  When you leave, you’ll probably also turn down your thermostat to save on energy costs.

However, a too-cold home is no place for plumbing.  Frozen pipes are prone to cracking, and even a 1/8” inch crack in a pipe can release up to 250 gallons of water per day.  Use a monitored low temperature detection sensor like the one in the Honeywell 5800Combo or 5821 with Total Connect to set up a mobile alert if the temperature in your home drops below an unsafe threshold.   Or if you prefer a phone call, the monitoring company will contact you so that you can take action.  And if your pipes do crack, the 5821 also can detect a leak before it becomes a full-fledged flood.

3 – Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning with a monitored alarm

The arrival of chilly fall temperatures means you’ll probably be turning on the heat.  But when heating units start up, improper venting can cause carbon monoxide to escape into your home.   Approximately 140 people across the US die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning in the cold winter months.

Having a monitored carbon monoxide detector like the one in the Honeywell 5800Combo can protect you by ensuring that the fire department will be called as soon as carbon monoxide is detected, which can be lifesaving.  As an added bonus, the 5800Combo works as a monitored smoke alarm too.

4 – Check that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working

For many in the US, the first week of November brings with it Daylight Savings time.  Savvy homeowners know that Daylight Savings doesn’t just mean it gets dark earlier – it also means that it’s time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

The NFPA recommends that all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced after 10 years.  Is it time to replace your units?  If so, consider upgrading to a monitored smoke and carbon monoxide alarm like the one mentioned above, which will automatically signal emergency response when the alarm sounds.

5 – Stay safe in the dark with smart lighting outside your home

In the post-Daylight Savings months, it gets dark out quite early.  And something as simple as carrying in your holiday shopping suddenly becomes a lot more complicated when you’re fumbling around for your light switch while holding your keys and an armful of packages.

Use the Total Connect app to setup a Smart Scene to light up your home automatically when you remotely unlock your front door.  Don’t unload those packages in the dark.
